Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in Chicago, Illinois
What is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a body-oriented talk therapy developed in the 1980’s by Pat Ogden. It blends cognitive and emotional approaches, talk therapy, and physical interventions that directly address the implicit memories and the effects of trauma on the brain. The body is the focus of the trauma therapy, rather than the trauma “story.” In other words, we attend to how the body is processing information, and its effects on emotions and thoughts in the present moment. Therefore, the body is important because a person “remembers” past trauma through the body reliving the traumatic event.
